The stunning Excelsior Works scheme will transform the site of a former book binding works in Hulme Hall Road into a high-quality, eight-storey development of 108 apartments next to the Bridgewater Canal.
Designed by Tim Groom Architects, the development features one, two and three-bedroom apartments. Some of the apartments have balconies and access to a communal roof garden. A basement car park will provide on-site parking.
The building will fill a plot left vacant when the original mill was demolished following a partial collapse in 2015. It will bring back an active frontage to the canal towpath with its double-height entrance.
The design responds to the distinct Manchester context of Castlefield and the turn in the canal. It also reinterprets the architectural history of the site and the old-fashioned printing trays in some of the ornamentation around the building entrances at roadside and canal edge.
