A major housing shortage is fuelling an increasingly urgent demand for more homes. Complex and sensitive issues are involved – not least building on green belt land – and are there is no easy solution.
New homes in the UK are among the smallest in Europe, with a recent poll suggesting 66 per cent of people feel they do not have enough room at home.
The poll, carried out for the Guardian newspaper, underscores a report from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). It found that the average three-bedroom home is eight per cent smaller than the London Housing Design Guide’s recommended minimum size.
